I work with children of all ages to help develop their literacy skills – from foundational reading to college essay writing. With the goal of accelerating growth and raising student achievement, I provide targeted interventions grounded in the science of reading. Whether your child is striving to learn to read and write or is a more accomplished reader and writer, I provide the right balance of challenge and support.
I employ a structured literacy approach when working with young learners and children who are experiencing reading/writing difficulties. Tutoring sessions encompass the key components of effective literacy instruction as identified by the National Reading Panel (NRP 2000): phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and are focused on specific student needs. The literacy domains, composition and motivation/engagement, which are well-established in the research literature as significant contributors to reading development are also addressed during tutoring sessions.
Sessions are structured so that new learning is approached step-by-step with sufficient teacher modeling and support to ensure your child’s mastery of skills and content. Instruction is both explicit and systematic so that your child can progress through a logical sequence of learning with teacher guidance that adapts to your child’s changing needs.
Sessions also prioritize shaping your child’s reader/writer identity development and fostering a positive learner self-image. I provide a supportive learning environment that ensures your child will grow both competence and confidence as a reader/writer. With a focus on motivating, evidence-aligned teaching practices, I am committed to engaging your child meaningfully and joyfully with text.
One-on-one, I get to know your child on a personal level and am able to individualize the learning process. I systematically sequence tutoring sessions to focus on learning targets that directly meet your child’s specific literacy learning goals/needs.
In working alongside your child, I will leverage and expand on his/her interests, natural curiosities, and knowledge of the world. My goal is to instill within your child a genuine desire to read and write for pleasure and purpose. I will encourage your child to ask thought-provoking questions, to seek solutions and problem-solve, to research less familiar topics and delve deeper, and to simply learn something new each day.
